Dating back to the Bronze Age, 1800 BCE, Jaffa has a rich history where to this day archaeology discovers something new. Excavations on Rabbi Pinchas Street, for example, in the flea market only a block away from where our apartment is, have revealed walls and water conduits dating to the Iron Age, Hellenistic period, early Islamic period, Crusader period and Ottoman era.

Our explorations today were much practical. We really wanted to get out on a bike and explore the shoreline. So, credit card in hand, we rented 70-pound green monsters that thankfully only needed to transport us along pretty flat bikeways. We didn't dare venture out into the street to compete with Israeli drivers with them. But even on the walkways you had to be careful because electric bikes, and motorized skateboards whizzed by at alarming speed. These riders are fast.

Jaffa Theatre, founded in 1998 in a multi-arched building in the Old City of Jaffa. It serves as a stage for two theater companies working independently and together in two languages, Hebrew and Arabic.
The Carmel Market, or " Shuk HaCarmel", is huge, covering several city blocks. Everything from Middle Eastern spices and fruits to French pastries, clothing and household goods can be found here. Created in the early 1920s the nearby neighborhood called Kerem HaTeimanim, literally 'the vineyard of the Yemenites’ was established with the support of a group of Russian immigrants, Arab farmers and merchants and grew into the most central and popular of Tel Aviv’s market places.
Halva, a delicious dense, sweet confection with roots in the West Asia, Central Asia, and India, and is extremely popular in the Middle East.
