It was time to leave our lovely apartment in Lisbon, but what a great stay. On the way, Naomi and Hilary took a few minutes to explore some local shops, while I enjoyed a cappuccino at a sidewalk coffee shop.
After enjoying a leisurely walk to the train station, arriving with 15 minutes before the train was scheduled to leave, we had a bit of a surprise. We were at the wrong train station! A very fast cab ride across town got us to the right one, The train left five minutes after we boarded. Whew.
Three hours later, we arrived at the Campanha terminal in Porto.
Located along the Douro River estuary in northern Portugal , Porto has a unique character, quite different from Lisbon. City life along the river's edge is vibrant, with many shops and riverside restaurants.
Old buildings encountered during a walk near the bridge have their own charm. Washing clothes doesn't appear to have changed much over the past few centuries.
The Dom Luís I Bridge spans the River Douro between the cities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia in Portugal. At 172 meters (564 feet) long, when it was first constructed, it was one of the longest of its type in the world. The overhead walkway is reserved for pedestrians and trams, while a lower level carries automobiles. The view from that height is spectacular. A tram takes passengers to the upper level, or you can climb a long, long flight of stairs if you prefer.
We enjoyed dinner that night at a lovely restaurant on the Vila Nova de Gaia side of the Douro river, then walked home across the bridge.
